'Burnham hints at tax increases' and 'Halt the hellrides'
Andy Burnham's arrival in Ukraine features on a number of front pages on Tuesday morning, but the key story for the Times is his refusal to rule out a tax increase in the autumn Budget. The paper reports that "when pressed" on how he would fund his public spending commitments, the prime minister said the public needed to understand that "we are in a challenging position".
Several of the papers are calling on social media platforms to stop the sharing of videos posted by joyriders - including the Metro. The front page declares "Time to halt the hellrides", and says a spokesperson from No 10 has "insisted" Ofcom has the government's "full backing to take tough action" against platforms that do not remove videos celebrating dangerous behaviour. It comes following a crash on the A66 crash that killed seven people, including two police officers.
"War on deadly joyride vids" reads the headline of the Sun, which says the prime minister has slammed the "truly reprehensible" TikTok trend. In a statement, Cleveland Police has said there is currently "no evidence to indicate that filming of the activities that took place" which resulted in the A66 crash were carried out for "the purposes of TikTok".
The Daily Express says police have made 12 arrests following the crash in Middlesborough on Saturday that killed seven, including two police officers. The paper's headline reads "Remove 'sick' danger driving footage now", and notes that as of Monday evening, videos of cars weaving through traffic at over 100mph were still visible on platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat.
The Guardian says the prime minister used his speech in Kyiv on Monday to accuse Russia of "outrageous threats to my country", comparing Ukraine's struggle to the UK's fight against Nazi Germany. He is pictured on the front page meeting Ukrainian war veterans on his first day in the capital.
The Telegraph suggests Burnham's visit has also seen him receive a "gold mine" of secret battlefield intelligence to help "protect the UK from Russian spies and saboteurs". According to the paper, the UK is the first country to be given access to Kyiv's vast "Avenger Labs" repository, which includes data that will be used to train technology at British military bases. It notes that the prime minister has agreed to give Ukraine classified information on British components in Storm Shadow missiles, so the nation is able to manufacture the weapons for use against Russia.
Housing Secretary Angela Rayner has revealed plans for 70,000 new homes across England, according to the i Paper. It says that £10bn will be handed to councils and housing associations to achieve the target, which has been designed to cut the number of families in temporary accommodation.
Donald Trump's pledge to bump the tariffs on Canadian cars to 50% leads the Financial Times, which says a trade war has "erupted" between the North American neighbours. The Tuesday edition of the Daily Mirror points to a "maternity crisis" in North Devon, after the district hospital was forced to temporarily close its maternity wing due to staff shortages. It reports patients were given classes on how to deliver a baby on the side of the motorway, as the nearest maternity ward is nearly two hours away in Exeter. "How did it get to this?" the paper asks in its headline.
