Four parks in Peterborough have retained their title as being among the best green spaces in the UK.

Central Park in the city has received the Green Flag Award for the 24th consecutive year.

The scheme, now in its 30th year, is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognising green spaces that are safe, welcoming and well-managed.

A total of 2,391 sites were recognised, including Peterborough's Itter Park, Manor Farm Park in Eye - both managed by the city council - and Ferry Meadows which is run by Nene Park Trust.

Chris Wiggin, Peterborough City Council's cabinet member for environment, thanked the volunteers who maintain the parks.

"It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams," said the Liberal Democrat councillor.

Every new entry to the scheme is assessed by judges, who make an appointment to inspect the site and meet staff and volunteers.

Greg Higby, head of landscape at Nene Park Trust, also thanked volunteers and the landscape and conservation team.
