North Lincolnshire Council believes the bypass will help drivers commuting to Scunthorpe from southern suburbs and villages

Plans for a new key route in and out of Scunthorpe have been submitted.

North Lincolnshire Council said its proposals for a "long-awaited" bypass would connect the M181 roundabout - on the southern part of the motorway - directly to Burringham Road.

If approved, the scheme would allow drivers in Ashby, Bottesford, Yaddlethorpe, Messingham and Burringham a direct and quicker access to the town, reducing congestion at a notorious bottleneck on Berkeley Circle, a spokesperson said.

Council leader Rob Waltham said: "This is a big step forward. We know residents have been asking for years where that roundabout leads and now we know. This is how this will be turned into a proper route."

Waltham added: "We've done the groundwork and secured the funding – now it's right that the plans go through the proper planning process.

"This will be considered independently, as it should be, but what we've done is make sure everything is in place to deliver it."

The council said funding for the project would come from the government's Local Regeneration Fund.
