Student nurse gets award for work with children
North West Anglia NHS Foundation TrustA student nurse has been recognised with an award for her work on a children's ward.
Tonicha Patterson, an undergraduate at Anglia Ruskin University's campus in Peterborough, works at Peterborough City Hospital.
She was named Student Nurse of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards in London last month. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of student nurses, midwives, educators and mentors from across the UK.
A spokesperson for North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said Patterson's passion for children's nursing and family-centred care had been evident throughout her training.
Patterson said she had dreamt of becoming a children's nurse since her own childhood, describing the role as both a "privilege" and "rewarding".
"My placements at Peterborough City Hospital include working on Amazon Ward, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Paediatric Emergency Department," she said.
"The staff were extremely supportive of my learning and development needs, and I don't think I would have won this award without the confidence and support that the team provided me with.
"One of the best things about paediatric nursing is that the learning never stops. I'm passionate about neonatal care and paediatric oncology, but I've enjoyed every placement."
