Three injured in linked disorder incidents

Police patrols have been increased in part of Sheffield after what officers said were two linked incidents of disorder which had left three people injured.

Officers would remain in the Page Hall area "through the night and in the coming days" following reports of violence on Monday and Tuesday, according to a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson.

People carrying wooden bats had been reported on Willoughby Street on Monday and a woman was left needing hospital treatment, while an alleged assault involving people with metal bars was reported on Owler Lane on Tuesday, they said.

Two men were seriously injured in the Owler Lane attack and the incidents were being treated as "connected", they added.

According to police, officers were first called at about 22:15 BST on Monday to reports of a disturbance involving a large group of people on Willoughby Street.

Members of the group were reported to have been carrying wooden bats and only dispersed after officers arrived.

A woman suffered minor injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment but had since been discharged.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on bail, the police spokesperson said.

Police were then called at about 16:30 BST on Tuesday to reports of a collision involving a silver Volkswagen Passat and a pedestrian on Owler Lane.

Occupants of the vehicle were believed to have got out and assaulted a man with metal bars, while a large group of people gathered at the scene.

Two men suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital, police said.

Owler Lane remained closed on Tuesday evening while officers carried out investigations and a police scene remained in place.

Police said officers in the Page Hall area had been granted Section 60 temporary stop and search powers which would remain in place until 19:40 BST on Wednesday.

While the order was active, officers could search anyone inside a specific area to check for weapons without needing standard reasonable suspicion, the South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.
