Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman
Bart MikoTwo Metropolitan Police officers have been charged after a heavily pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a crash with an unmarked police car in south-east London.
PC Chris Johnson has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and former PC Danny Tomkins has been charged with dangerous driving following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The 38-year-old driver's child died at the scene of the crash on the A20, near the junction with Kidbrooke Park in Kidbrooke on 17 October 2024. She later died in hospital.
Both men are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 28 May.
PA MediaJohnson was driving the vehicle involved in the collision while the charge for Tomkins, who was driving a second car, "relates to his alleged manner of driving", according to the IOPC, which said its investigation concluded in October last year.
Acting Det Ch Supt James Derham said: "Our thoughts remain with the woman's family and friends, who continue to grieve the loss of her and her unborn child. This was a truly terrible and heartbreaking incident.
"The IOPC have conducted a thorough and complex investigation and we have worked closely with them as their inquiries have progressed.
"It is important that nothing is said that could prejudice the court proceedings that will now follow, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
