Yellow markings in Sullivan Road appeared in January, only to be obliterated twice

Road markings that were painted over potholes, dug up and then restored earlier this year have been dug up for a second time.

The yellow School Keep Clear lines were painted in Sullivan Road in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in January, only to be removed days later for pothole repairs.

Gas firm SGN has now dug up some of the reinstated lines for "planned pipework replacement".

Hampshire County Council said the markings would be restored "promptly" but did not comment on the coordination of the work.

Resident Bob Lloyd said the work was "a waste"

Resident Bob Lloyd said: "Once they repair, they dig it up again. It's just pure frustration.

"I pay taxes and it's a waste. One department not talking to another, as far as I'm concerned.

"The gas board have known about this because they've been working elsewhere on the estate. They've known for some time where they're going to dig places up."

Earlier this year, the yellow lines were painted over potholes before being removed

SGN said its project would run from April to December, mostly on footpaths but also including some spells of roadworks.

In a statement, Hampshire County Council said: "It is a requirement of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 that all road markings which are removed during utility works are replaced following the works' completion.

"Our street works team will liaise with SGN to ensure this happens promptly."

In February, the council acknowledged: "Ideally, the re-lining should have been paused to allow the [pothole] repair to be completed first."
