Extra time for police to quiz five after baby death

Five people arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a newborn baby girl in Sheffield continue to be questioned, police have said.

A total of seven people aged between 15 and 37 were originally arrested on Sunday after officers were called to a property on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area, following reports of a concern for the safety of an infant.

South Yorkshire Police said, despite the best efforts of officers and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two of the seven arrested, aged 26 and 37, were bailed but the force confirmed it had obtained a warrant to extend time in custody for the remaining five as inquiries continue.

Det Ch Insp Tom Woodward, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our priority from the outset of this investigation has been to secure justice for the baby girl at the centre of this heartbreaking case and we are working round the clock to ensure this is achieved.

"This investigation is complex, with many different parts which are moving fast."

He added: "As we work to establish answers, we please ask that you avoid speculating around the circumstances of this tragic incident."
