Cathedral dean speaks of light in divided world

The dean of a cathedral has appealed for people of all faiths and none to come together for the good of all as thousands of Christians mark Easter.

On Easter Sunday Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead after his crucifixion on Good Friday.

In a special Easter message, the Very Reverend Chris Dalliston, dean of Peterborough Cathedral, said: "At the cathedral we begin our Easter celebrations on Saturday night, carrying a candle into the darkness of our ancient building and passing the light to one another.

"It's a powerful reminder of the need for light in our dark, divided and dangerous world – and our responsibility to share it."

"For Christians we see the resurrection of Jesus from the dead as a sign that evil, hatred and despair can never defeat love, hope and truth.

"But in times like this, it's our prayer that people of all faiths and none can join together in seeking to be bearers of light and peace, honouring the dignity and ultimate worth of every human life, and working together for the good of all," he said.

Lent is a six-week period leading up to Easter, which began on 18 February.

Both Peterborough Cathedral and Ely Cathedral have held services and events to mark Lent and Holy Week, the last week of Lent, which begins on the Sunday before Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
