The founder of a community hub has praised the "amazing" response of locals after a donation box was stolen.

RUSH 2The DEN in Rushden, Northamptonshire, provides a youth club for children aged five to seven, adult-and-baby play sessions, children's parties, food donations and counselling.

Nina Robinson said the money in the box, thought to be between £400 and £600, would have helped pay to furnish a mezzanine level being built at the site.

Since the theft, she said it had been "amazing" how people had "clubbed together to give whatever they can afford".

She was deeply grateful for the community's support and said donations had ranged from £5 to "some much more generous" amounts.

"People have come to us and told us stories about all of the things we have supported them with," said Robinson.

"It's reminded us of why we do what we do.

"Their messages have really restored both our positivity and our faith in humanity."

Northamptonshire Police said the box had been stolen from the Fitzwilliam Street site at about 19:30 BST on Friday, 8 May.

The force is continuing to appeal for information.

Robinson said RUSH 2The DEN's volunteers had been "in tears" when the box had been taken.

She described it as a "horrific incident" that had left her "outraged".

A local firm had pledged to provide a carpet for the renovation project, she added.

"I'd just like to say how amazing everyone has been in coming together to support us and boost our morale."

Northamptonshire Police said anyone with information should contact 101.
