Warning issued after fire at sports pavilion
Kevin WhincupA warning has been issued for people to stay away from the scene of a fire that destroyed a former pavilion at a sports ground.
The blaze broke out at the derelict building at Weston Green Sports Club, Thames Ditton, on Thursday evening, according to Surrey Fire and Rescue service.
The Old Cranleighan Society, which owns the site, said it will be making the area "fully secure" ahead of a complete clean up but "due to the bank holiday weekend, full boarding and fencing cannot commence until Tuesday".
A spokesperson said: "The fire brigade have highlighted that there are significant hazards including exposed debris, sharp materials, and potential risks from lingering smoke and fumes."
The statement added: "While we understand people are naturally curious to see what has happened, we must stress that the area is currently unsafe.
The club said people should stay away from the grass pitches on the Weston Green site "which may also have been affected by debris which may not be immediately apparent".
The main Old Cranleighan Club and clubhouse remains open.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service had advised residents to close doors of windows due to a plume of smoke coming from the blaze.
An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
