Crews have dealt with a "very large grass fire" which spread close to trees in Birmingham.

About 2,500m of grass within fields set alight in an area near Castle Vale in Birmingham, West Midlands Fire Service said. The fire was spreading into tree lines and allotments behind the Greenway Academy school were also on fire, it added.

Members of the public were advised to avoid the area of Farnborough Road in Castle Vale. It added the fire had been contained to land, not buildings, and no evacuations were necessary. It was treated as a wildfire.

The chief of the National Fire Chiefs Council earlier warned firefighters were facing "extreme pressure" due to the prolonged heatwave.

Crews from Sheldon, Erdington, Solihull and Hay Mills were called to the fire, which started at about 20:30 BST and was out by 22:00.
