A Greater Manchester school has been forced to close and pupils sent home after threatening messages were sent.

Students at the Oasis Academy MediaCityUK secondary school in Salford were told to leave earlier after the threats were made.

Greater Manchester Police said officers were trying to find those responsible for the "malicious communications", which were also sent to various other schools across the area.

However, the force said there was "no credible evidence to suggest the threat is real".

Officers were treating the threatening messages as one investigation and approaching the case with a "standard response".

Oasis Academy principal Christian Harris said the school decided to close as a precaution.

"As the police have publicly stated, there is currently no credible evidence to suggest the related threat is real," he said.

"The academy is working closely with Greater Manchester Police and relevant partners and is following well-established procedures."

Families have been contacted and will be updated "as more information becomes available", he added.
