Devon & Cornwall Police said a man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man.

Devon & Cornwall Police said officers were called to a property on Embankment Road in the Cattedown area of Plymouth just after 20:20 BST on Monday after receiving reports of a serious assault.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene and a cordon set up while "extensive inquiries" are conducted over the coming days, the force said.

A 57-year-old man, believed to be known to the victim, was arrested on suspicion of murder following a search by police in the area. Anyone with information has been asked to to contact investigating officers or Crimestoppers.

Det Supt Rachael Bentley said the incident was believed to be isolated with "no wider risk to the public".

"This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life," Bentley added.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

Officers have asked residents and motorists to check any CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage from the area at the time the incident unfolded.

Bentley said: "Even information that may seem small could be vital to our investigation."
