Avoid lighting bonfires due to strong winds

A fire service has urged people not to light bonfires in Jersey due to strong winds.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service issued the warning following a bonfire in Corbiere which spread rapidly because of strong winds.

Jersey Met issued a yellow wind warning on Friday with the strongest winds expected up until 20:50 BST.

The fire service said even with some recent rain the land is still "very dry" and strong winds could "quickly carry flames and embers into surrounding vegetation, causing fires to spread unexpectedly".

The service urged people to refrain from lighting bonfires and encouraged those who want to have a barbecue to avoid setting up near vegetation that could catch fire.

It said to ensure coals, ashes and the ground beneath "are fully extinguished and cooled" and to pour water over the area and never dispose of hot ashes in bins.

The service also said to avoid smoking in dry areas and to not dispose of cigarette ends or glass bottles, as they could spark a serious fire.
