Gas works to disrupt 'lifeline' bus service

Residents in part of Peterborough have raised concerns about changes to a bus service during planned gas works.

Bus operator Stagecoach said its Number 3 service, which serves parts of Bretton, will not stop at Bretton Centre between 1 September and 25 October while Cadent Gas carries out pipe replacement works in the area.

During the disruption, the nearest stop for passengers will be Eyescroft, Dearleap or Peterborough City Hospital.

Labour councillor for Bretton, Richard Stangward, said residents would be significantly affected.

"This bus route is a lifeline for a lot of residents, especially pensioners, and they're very concerned about the impact it will have on their day-to-day lives," he said.

Stangward said he had been told the whole bus lane serving Bretton Centre would need to be closed due to the location of the pipes.

He said the "city council have requested Stagecoach for an alternative stop to be put in place temporarily but as yet nothing has been confirmed".

Cadent said the work, which is taking place around Flaxland, involved replacing ageing metal gas pipes with new plastic pipes designed to provide a more reliable and sustainable gas network.

The company said gas supplies to some nearby homes may need to be temporarily interrupted at certain stages of the project, with affected residents being notified in advance.
