A man has been jailed for five years for raping a teenage girl.

Tedros Goytom, 28, attacked the girl, who was 16 at the time, while they were walking together near Winterthur Way in Basingstoke on 2 September 2022.

Police said on Monday he was sentenced after a trial at Winchester Crown Court and the pair had known each other through social media.

Det Con Victoria Cobley, who led the investigation for Hampshire police, said Goytom's behaviour was "predatory and horrific" and his "despicable crime" had a "huge impact on the victim and her family".

She praised the victim's courage and said she hoped the conviction would provide some reassurance to her and her family.

"While nothing can undo what they have been through, I hope that knowing Goytom will now spend time behind bars will provide reassurance that we will do all we can to bring perpetrators to justice," she said.

"Our officers will not tolerate violence against women and girls in our communities, and it is our promise to anyone who comes forward that you will be believed and taken extremely seriously."

Goytom, of Old Street, Hackney, had been living at an address on Popley Way in Basingstoke at the time.
