Tribute to racer's 'determination and passion'

A racer killed in a crash during qualifying for the Manx Grand Prix has been praised for his "character, determination and passion".

Sam Naughton, of Castletown on the Isle of Man, died in the crash at Doran's Bend, on the western section of the 37.7 mile (31km) Mountain Course, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Andreas Racing Association (ARA), where the 37-year-old completed his race school training to allow him to become competitive, said it was deeply saddened by his death.

"No words can truly ease the pain that is being felt," it said, following the loss of "one of our own".

In a tribute, the ARA said: "His determination, enthusiasm and love of motorcycle racing were evident to everyone who knew him, and it was a privilege to see him fulfil his dream of competing on the Mountain Course for the first time in 2025."

"Sam's character, determination and passion for the sport touched so many people and he will be remembered with great affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

The Southern 100 Club, which runs events on the Billown Course in the south of the island, also paid tribute.

The club said he was a regular competitor in the Pre-TT Classic Road Races, where he secured a podium position in the Consolation Race A in 2024, making his debut in the Southern 100 Road Races the same year.

Naughton's contribution to racing in the south "went far beyond competing" and he was "always willing to lend a hand", the club said.

"He was a valued part of the Southern 100 family, both as a competitor and as someone who gave his time so willingly to support the club and road racing on the Billown Course."

The club extended its deepest sympathy to his wife Charlotte and their four children and his wider family and friends.

Also paying tribute, Castletown Metropolitan Football Club, where Naughton was a junior coach, said he was "one of the very best, who will be missed more than words can say".

In a post on social media, the club said: "Sam lost his life doing something he truly loved at the Manx Grand Prix, but he was so much more than a racer.

"He was a devoted husband and father, a brilliant coach and a genuinely kind, caring and fun person.

As a football coach he "loved training the boys and always had their best interests at heart", the club said.

"He encouraged them, believed in them and made sure they enjoyed themselves along the way.

"The time, care and enthusiasm he gave them will never be forgotten."
