Airport closed and planes grounded after thunderstorm

Bristol Airport is closed after a thunderstorm caused damage to air traffic control systems.

All flights are currently grounded due to an earlier thunderstorm, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.

Bristol Airport said it was urging passengers to contact their airline and to check before they travel.

On its website, the airport said: "Following the earlier electrical storm, Bristol Airport remains closed to arriving and departing aircraft whilst engineers investigate a fault with Air Traffic Control systems. Customers should contact their airline with any specific flight queries."
