A man has been airlifted to hospital after his car collided with a tree, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway of the A64, near York, just before 08:00 BST on Sunday.

North Yorkshire Police said the crash involved a silver Honda Jazz, which left the road and hit a tree, resulting in the driver, a man in his 40s, being taken to hospital.

He remains in a serious condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

The A64 was closed until about 13:30 BST for investigation work to take place.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash and those who may have dashcam footage to come forward.
