Friends gathered for a day of festivities as a woman celebrated her 106th birthday.

Alice Foulkes greeted well wishers at Elgar Court Care Home in Malvern, Worcestershire, after receiving a second birthday card from King Charles.

Last year, she received more than 200 cards for her 105th birthday and the home said that tally was quickly beaten this time.

"I don't know, I'm surprised, really," Foulkes said of reaching 106. "I wouldn't have guaranteed this at all."

Born in 1920, she spent a decade working for Elizabeth Arden and Dior and another 10 years at the Midlands Electricity Board, taking payments and helping families.

She has previously been sent cards by Queen Elizabeth II.

Sarah Cadwallader, general manager at Elgar Court, described the resident as "one of the most inspirational people we've got here", and one who liked a Bailey's at the end of the night.

"She's full of giggle [and] she's full of joy," Cadwallader said. "She's just not shy at trying anything."

Among her birthday wishes was a new winter coat, with Cadwallader saying a trip to Marks & Spencer was planned.
