A large mid-sea rescue operation took place after a man on a yacht sustained "significant injuries".

Guernsey Coastguard received a mayday call at about 11:50 BST on Friday from the vessel, which was about 25 miles (40km) west of Alderney.

The coastguard said it was told a man on board the boat had fallen and "may have been suffering from a more serious underlying medical condition".

Alderney's all-weather lifeboat and a French rescue helicopter were involved in getting the man to Guernsey for hospital treatment. Another vessel which was near the yacht also helped, a coastguard spokesperson added.

An update from the coastguard said the man was in a stable condition and undergoing further tests to establish the cause of the initial fall.

The coastguard added other members of the yacht's crew were also taken to hospital after the vessel arrived in Guernsey.

Simon Granger, duty search and rescue mission co-ordinator, thanked everyone involved in the rescue operation.

"This co-ordinated multi-agency response ensured the casualty reached hospital care in the quickest possible time-frame," he said.
