A man who died in a crash after being chased by police has been identified, as one of his passengers has been charged with robbery.

At about 04:00 BST on Tuesday, a blue VW Golf hit a concrete bollard after a "short pursuit" on Elizabeth Way in Hartlepool, Cleveland Police said.

The 44-year-old driver who was killed in the crash has been named as Duane Michael Birdsall.

A 42-year-old woman, who was travelling in the car, has now been arrested and charged with robbery in connection with an incident the same morning, the force said.

She is due to appear in court on 5 May.

A second passenger, a man aged 34, remains in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The road was closed for 12 hours.

Cleveland Police has appealed for anyone with information or video footage to get in touch.

It previously said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
