Indian weightlifting team praises host university

The Indian weightlifting team has praised the "world-class" facilities at a university where the squad trained for the Commonwealth Games.

The athletes arrived at the University of Wolverhampton's Walsall campus on 29 June and were there until Tuesday, completing their preparations ahead of the event in Glasgow.

They were given access to the site's health and performance suite, where they were training twice a day as members acclimatised to the UK time zone.

Rohit Chhabria, the team's physiotherapist, said: "Wolverhampton has all the facilities that we need and they are world-class."

The squad was hopeful of at least one gold medal in the games, Chhabria added, and have entered weightlifters in 12 categories.

Mark Niemz, senior lecturer in strength and conditioning at the university, said it had been a "privilege" to host the athletes.

"We are delighted that the team has chosen to complete its Commonwealth Games preparations here," he added.

"We wish all of the athletes every success in Glasgow."
