A series of rolling road closures will be in place for Leicester's half marathon and 10km (6.2-mile) race on Sunday.

Leicester City Council said more than 5,000 runners were expected to take part in both events.

The races start and finish at Victoria Park, from 09:15 BST, with a route heading through the city centre and out to Thurmaston, Birstall and Watermead Country Park.

The council said parking and loading restrictions would be implemented to keep the route free of traffic, and temporary road closures would also be in place while the race passes through.

It added the measures had been signposted along the route in advance and roads were expected to have reopened fully by 13:00.

The route includes London Road, St George's Way, Charles Street, Belgrave Gate and out of the city centre, through Melton Road and out towards Thurmaston, Watermead Country Park and Birstall.

'Fantastic event'

The race will return along Red Hill Circle, Loughborough Road and the riverside path, before going through Abbey Park and the city centre.

The final stretch heads up New Walk via De Montfort Street and University Road, to Victoria Park.

Runners taking part in the 10km race will follow the same route as far as Melton Road, before travelling along Loughborough Road, Holden Street and Ross Walk to rejoin the riverside path.

The route will then go past the Space Centre and Abbey Park on its way back to the city centre.

Organisers added bus services from the city centre would be running as normal, but some would be diverted to alternative bus stops nearby while the race is in progress, with any changes signposted.

Andrew Ward, race director, said: "We would encourage everyone to come out and support this fantastic event.

"Run Leicester is not just for runners at the end of the day; there's loads of entertainment dotted around the route for everyone to enjoy too."
