Trial to ease dog and horse summer beach access
PA MediaRestrictions for dogs and horses on beaches in Alderney will be eased next summer as part of a trial.
Under proposed plans, States of Alderney General Services Committee said the animals would be allowed on Longis Beach overnight between 17:00 and 08:00 BST between 1 June and 15 September.
Currently there is a complete beach access ban for dogs and horses during those months - but a recent survey showed there was support for the move. The trial will be in place for 2026 and 2027.
A total of 640 people responded to the survey with 43% supporting the current measures and 53% opposing them.
A total of 57% supported allowing dogs and horses on Longis Beach during the 15-hour window. The States said it would consider adding another beach, the eastern end of Braye, at a later date.
Iain MacFarlane, Chair of General Services Committee, said although views were "mixed" there was "strong support for overnight access at Longis Beach".
He said: "This is about listening to the community and finding balanced solutions. The trial will allow us to test the approach while ensuring safety and environmental considerations remain a priority."
Mr MacFarlane said an engagement campaign would be launched before the trial to ensure everyone was "fully informed" about the new rules.
"The campaign will also emphasise the responsibilities of pet owners and address key safety considerations for children and other beach users," he added.
