An illegal encampment has reappeared on a popular seafront site days after being moved on.

The group had pitched up on The Links outside Whitley Bay's Spanish City venue last weekend, but when told to leave on Tuesday they moved to a site near St Mary's Lighthouse car park.

On Friday, the group was back at the original site, with North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Police trying to move them on again.

The local authority's director of housing and property services Peter Mennell said: "We will continue the legal process to ensure the group leaves the land as soon as possible."

He said a community protection team "has visited the site to engage with those present and make them aware of the next steps".

The presence of the encampment previously led to groups postponing events.

Whitley Bay Junior Parkrun cancelled its regular 2km (1.2-mile) run last Sunday due to "unexpected vehicles on our start and finish line".
