About 35 firefighters have tackled a barn blaze where about six-and-a-half tonnes of fertiliser was stored.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue said it was called to a farm on Banbury Lane, Blakesley, close to Towcester, at about 17:15 BST on Tuesday, and it was under control by about 21:30.

It put a 600m (1968ft) cordon in place in Banbury Lane, which remains.

The service said police attended to support evacuation measures for nearby properties.

The barn contained "hay, straw, and approximately six-and-a-half tonnes of fertiliser", and jets and ground monitors were used to prevent it spreading, the service said.

People were asked to avoid the area and keep their windows closed.

An investigation is due to take place into its cause.

The service is also due to maintain a presence at the site for several days while it is made safe, and a drone is being used to monitor temperatures and the surrounding area.

Firefighters thanked residents for their patience.
