Portchester Crematorium has reminded mourners that ashes must not be scattered in its gardens without permission

A crematorium has warned mourners not to scatter ashes in its gardens without permission.

The committee that manages Portchester Crematorium, near Fareham, said ashes had occasionally been scattered in the grounds by members of the public without approval.

It said authorised ash scattering was carried out by crematorium staff in a "respectful and dignified manner".

A spokesperson said: "Crematorium staff are mindful of people visiting their loved ones in the same locations, so the ashes are never left visible."

When conducted by staff, ashes are scattered into a hollow in the ground before being covered over.

The committee said crematorium regulations do not permit ashes to be scattered without an appointment.

It added that ashes can occasionally become disturbed by wild animals digging in the gardens.

When this happens, staff take immediate action to return the ashes and restore the area.
