A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 52-year-old woman.

Officers and paramedics were called to a property on Green Lane in Caldicot, Monmouthshire at about 03:00 BST on Thursday after the woman was found unresponsive.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 50-year-old man from Caldicot, who was known to the woman, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Matthew Clarke of Gwent Police, said the force wanted to "reassure the communities of Caldicot that we are doing everything we can to establish the circumstances surrounding the victim's death".

He added they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

"Residents may see an increased number of officers in the area as we carry out further enquiries.

"We encourage anyone with information to please speak with one of our officers or contact us on the usual channels."

Police tape and forensic vans - Lucy Vladev from the scene

Neighbours on Green Lane, in Caldicot, have woken up with police tape and forensic vans outside their houses.

The street is cordoned off with officers in white forensic overalls going in and out of a property about half way down the street. There are also investigating officers arriving and speaking to the team outside.

Not many members of the public were keen to speak to us, but some have told me it is usually a quiet residential area. The first they knew about anything was when they saw an ambulance outside this morning.

The residents say they are expecting the police presence to continue here for at least a few hours.
