Army bomb disposal experts were called for after an "object" was discovered at Kenilworth Castle on Thursday afternoon.

Warwickshire Police earlier posted on social media that a cordon had been put in place around the building for safety reasons, while officers waited for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to arrive.

However, the cordon was quickly lifted after initial suspicions turned out to be false.

Kenilworth Castle said police teams had also left the site.

A spokesperson for the castle said: "Earlier today, a member of the team at Kenilworth Castle discovered an unidentified object in an area outside the castle walls.

"The castle team alerted the police who came to the site and set up a cordon. The police subsequently confirmed that the object was not suspicious, removed the cordon, and left the site."

The castle dates from the 12th Century and was at the heart of one of the longest sieges in medieval history in 1266. The latest one proved considerably shorter.

The castle was once owned by John of Gaunt, Henry V and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester.
