A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an alleged hit-and-run in which a pedestrian was critically injured.

The victim, a man in his 40s, remains in hospital after the incident in Crowstone Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, at about 07:30 BST on Thursday.

Essex Police said the white Mercedes involved was recovered nearby, having been stolen from an address in Southend-on-Sea at 01:00.

The force later forensically examined the vehicle and said it was investigating the collision "at pace".

The car, believed to have been taken from Sutton Road, was described as a white Mercedes C-Class with the registration YD14 OHT.

The man struck by the vehicle was given immediate treatment from members of the public, police officers and paramedics.

A police spokesman said: "Detectives are continuing a number of inquiries across the Westcliff and wider Southend area as they work to establish the circumstances of the collision and identify a suspect."

He said this involved CCTV inquiries and door-to-door visits.
