Road reopens following blaze at thatched roof pub
Devizes Fire StationA road reopened overnight after a fire broke out in the thatched roof of a Grade II-listed pub.
The A360 at High Street, Potterne near Devizes, Wiltshire, had been closed as firefighters tackled the blaze at the George and Dragon Inn on Wednesday afternoon.
Staff at Devizes Fire Station said the last of the relief crews left around 02:00 BST after dampening down the thatched roof and managing to "limit the damage".
The fire service added it would "be back for a re-inspection" of the charred roof before the property is handed back to its owners.
At the height of the incident there were 10 fire crews at the scene, from Devizes, Trowbridge, Calne, Chippenham, Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett, Warminster and Melksham.
About 50 firefighters were tackling the blaze at its peak.
Fire breaks were put in place either side of the central chimney, with thatch being stripped away from the roof to prevent the flames spreading.
