Northampton confirms bid for Town of Culture title
West Northamptonshire CouncilNorthampton has officially submitted a bid to become the first-ever UK Town of Culture in 2028.
Leader of Reform UK-run West Northamptonshire Council, Mark Arnull, said: "This bid is about shining a light on the people, places and traditions that make our wonderful town unique."
The authority confirmed it had submitted a joint expression of interest with Northampton Town Council, cultural partners and community organisations.
Inspired by the success of the UK City of Culture competition, the government said the new title would "celebrate towns and help to create a lasting cultural legacy", with a shortlist of contenders expected to be announced "in the spring".
West Northamptonshire CouncilThe We Are Northampton bid highlights the town's identity and celebrates assets such as the Cultural Quarter, Delapre Abbey, and the Museum and Art Gallery.
Arnull said Northampton had "a proud story and a creative spirit that runs through every part of our town".
"Becoming the UK Town of Culture would help us bring fresh investment into the town, support our young people, boost local businesses and show the country what Northampton has to offer," he added.
Northampton Town mayor Jane Birch said: "It's a chance to put Northampton firmly on the map, celebrate our culture and heritage, and add a new chapter to our shared history."
What is a Town of Culture?
UK Town of Culture is a brand new Department for Culture, Media and Sport competition.
The government will select the best small, medium and large towns from the applications it receives, with the result expected to be announced in 2027.
One of these will be named UK Town of Culture 2028 and receive £3m, while the other two finalists will each receive £250,000 to deliver a programme of cultural activity in 2028.
This is in addition to development grants for shortlisted places to work up their full bids.
