Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident on Beckett Street in Leeds

A man has been arrested following the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car during a police pursuit in Leeds.

The 36-year-old woman died in hospital after being struck by a Vauxhall Corsa in Beckett Street at about 09:52 GMT, just minutes after it failed to stop for officers in Harehills Road.

The car was later found abandoned in Nippet Lane, with the occupants having fled the scene, West Yorkshire Police said.

A 19-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody, the force said.

A police spokesperson said on Thursday an investigation had been started by its Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, and appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam to come forward.

They added that a mandatory referral had been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in relation to the incident, due to prior police involvement.
