Fifteen drivers have had their vehicles towed away for parking near the site of the Goose Fair in Nottingham.

Nottingham City Council said it had expanded the parking restrictions on roads around the Forest Recreation Ground site this year.

A spokesperson added an estimated 172,962 people attended the first three days of the fair, during which 530 Penalty Charge Notices were handed out and the 15 vehicles were removed.

The council has urged motorists to check on parking restrictions before they attend the event.

A Freedom of Information Act request by the BBC found 877 fines were issued during the whole 10-day event last year.

Around 450 fines were handed out in each of the previous three years.

Nottingham City Council said it had trained more staff to enforce the rules in an effort to reduce the impact of the fair on people living nearby.

The spokesperson added: "This year, we have taken steps to reduce the impact of Goose Fair on residents by expanding the temporary permit parking scheme on roads surrounding the site.

"These measures are in place to help ensure residents can access parking near their homes and to maintain safe access for emergency vehicles.

"We would encourage all visitors to check parking restrictions and event travel information before travelling to Goose Fair and to use public transport wherever possible."
