New town centre police station officially opens

A new police station in Huddersfield town centre has officially opened, marking the end of a decade-long scheme to replace "key police estate" in Kirklees.

Huddersfield Police Station's help desk will operate on weekdays and offer residents the opportunity to report crime directly, West Yorkshire Police said.

A number of officers from teams that specifically serve the local area will be based at the new site off Broadway.

The station is the second new police building to begin operating in the borough this year after Kirklees District Headquarters opened in Dewsbury in July.

The force said Huddersfield neighbourhood policing, patrol officers and representatives of the Huddersfield proactive town centre team will be based at the station.

Supt Warren Pittman said: "The opening of the new police station marks a second and final milestone in the force's long-running programme to renew our estate in Kirklees.

"It is no secret that the old police stations in Huddersfield and Dewsbury had reached the end of their lives and I think it is brilliant for communities that we've been able to invest in new buildings for them as part of wider regeneration in both towns."

Supt Pittman said the new building will allow the force to "maintain a full neighbourhood and response policing patrol" across Huddersfield, and provide a place for residents to directly report incidents to officers.
