The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Kyle Buchan abused teenage girls in Dundee

A violent sex offender who targeted teenage girls during a crime spree has been jailed for nine years.

Kyle Buchan began committing the offences in Tayside when he was 15 and continued until he was 20.

The 22-year-old denied a series of charges during an earlier trial, but was convicted of five offences involving violence, sexual violence including rape, and abusive behaviour.

A judge at the High Court in Edinburgh told him his attitude towards young women and sexual entitlement was "very worrying".

Judge Norman McFadyen KC said the statements given by his victims were "harrowing and highly troubling".

The court heard they were aged between 14 and 18 at the time of the abuse.

The judge told Buchan: "You had a troubled upbringing and are still young."

He said he had to take these factors into account in sentencing Buchan but added: "Plainly only a custodial sentence is appropriate."

He ordered that Buchan should be under close supervision in the community for a further three years.

"If you breach any of the conditions you can be returned to custody," he added.

Buchan attacked one of his victims on Dundee's Law Hill

The court heard that Buchan carried out a sex attack on a girl he knew, who was aged 14 or 15 at the time, in Dundee's Fairfield Park in 2021.

He grabbed the victim and carried out a penetrative assault on her.

From 2019, Buchan subjected another underage girl to prolonged abusive conduct at locations in Dundee during which he isolated her from her mother and friends.

Buchan subjected her to attempted rape and rape during a series of assaults, which began when she was 14, at locations in Tayside, including bushes on Law Hill, Dundee.

He made derogatory, abusive, sexual and threatening remarks to her and monitored her movements. He also sent her abusive text messages and demanded to know who she was with.

'No guidance in life'

One of his other victims was a 17-year-old girl, who he attacked while she slept at a flat in Dundee in March 2024.

Buchan targeted another teenager with abusive behaviour between June and December in 2024 at locations in Dundee when he demanded she remove males from her social media account.

He prevented her from using her mobile phone, isolated her from family and friends and stopped her visiting her mother.

During the abuse, he pulled her from a sofa and dragged her along the floor, repeatedly punched her and followed her.

On one occasion he told her to speak to a lawyer and attempt to retract a statement she gave to police in August 2024.

Buchan committed the abuse against the victim after being freed on bail eight times at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Defence solicitor advocate James Keegan KC, for Buchan, said he had had "a terrible life".

He added: "Frankly, he has had no guidance in life at all. He has gone from one establishment to another."

Buchan was placed on the sex offenders register and the court made non-harassment orders prohibiting him from contacting or attempting to contact the victims.
