A lifting bridge is set to close for five days for routine maintenance work.

Poole Bridge connects Hamworthy with Poole via the A350 across a busy boating channel and saves drivers about a a six-mile (9.6km) detour.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council said alongside the work on the bridge, built in 1927, the approaching roads would be resurfaced and waterproofed during the closure.

The bridge will shut to all vehicles and pedestrians between 09:30 on 27 April and 18:00 BST on 1 May. A revised lifting timetable will be in place for boats.

The Twin Sails Bridge is expected to remain in use. It reopened at the beginning of February after being closed for more than five months after a routine inspection deemed the lifting mechanism unsafe to operate.

BCP Council urged residents to plan their routes during the closure and warned that dry weather was needed for the planned waterproofing works "and therefore may be impacted in the event of rain".
