Armed police descended on Bury New Road in the Whitefield area of Greater Manchester

A man has been shot and injured by armed police after a suspect drove his car at officers, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has said.

It happened on Bury New Road in Prestwich at about 15:00 BST.

GMP said officers had been trying to stop a vehicle that was then driven towards them as the driver tried to get away.

One officer opened fire and a man in the vehicle was wounded in the arm and taken to hospital with an arm injury described by police as "neither life-threatening nor life-changing".

A 20-year-old man, described by the force as "white British", has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

Det Supt Joe Harrop, from the GMP Serious Crime Division, said: "We know people in the area will be concerned by what has happened and the visible increase in police officers in the local area as our investigations continue.

"Thankfully no members of the wider public or officers were harmed in the incident this afternoon and we thank people for their patience while we remain at the scene.

"Should anyone have any concerns, please speak with our officers who are out in the local area - they are there to listen and assist where possible."

The incident been referred to Independent Office for Police Conduct, in line with standard procedure, GMP said.
