A baker known for her skilful lifesize creations has gone beyond expectations with a 5ft (1.52m) Buzz Lightyear cake which includes a laser and sound effects.

Lara Mason from Walsall, West Midlands, said she wanted to celebrate the release of Toy Story 5, with her giant cake which also includes retractable wings.

Mason started the project a month ago by dismantling a Buzz Lightyear toy to work out how to make her cake "come to life" with electronic wiring.

"Everyone has been blown away by this one. Even before they realise that his buttons work and his wings open," she said. The cake has now been cut up and frozen and will be given to local food banks.

Lara Mason has been cake-making for more than 13 years

Mason has been making cakes for more than 13 years and previously made replicas of Taylor Swift, Shrek, Deadpool, and the Grinch.

However, she said retractable wings were a first.

"It was no easy task to get the wiring and buttons all working for the sounds and the laser, but I managed it thankfully," she said.

Mason added her husband was the "brains behind the wings".

Ingredients for the towering toy creation included 250 eggs, 12.5kg of butter and 35kg of modelling chocolate, as well as edible stickers.

She made the space ranger's face before making sections of the vanilla cake, which also included cookies, cream buttercream and chocolate ganache.

The cake took her about 75 hours to make over five days.

She said the hot weather meant they had "no choice but to slice him up".

The Buzz Lightyear slices are being stored in the freezer before being distributed to food banks soon.
