The cemetery will provide a place to remember much-loved family members, the council said

A pet cemetery has opened in Hailsham after the town council found the nearest alternative site was in Lewes.

Hailsham Town Council said the site was created to offer families a peaceful and respectful place to remember their much-loved pets.

It includes landscaping, newly planted shrubs, seating and gravel areas and is expected to hold about 120 plots.

Town councillor Mary Laxton said: "For many people, pets are beloved members of the family, and their loss can be deeply felt. This project aims to provide a dignified and local place where residents can lay their pets to rest and remember them in peaceful surroundings."

She said the site had been designed to give families a special place to visit for years to come, adding that it would help people avoid the difficulty and costs of travelling further afield.
