Work to start on £4.68m household recycling centre

Work on a new £4.68m household recycling centre is expected to start next month.

The facility will be built at Hundred Road in March and will include improved level access to recycling containers, increased parking and dedicated pedestrian and cycling access.

The project was approved by Cambridgeshire County Council's environment and green investment committee in July 2024.

Construction is due to start in mid-August 2026 and is expected to take around nine months. The new site is expected to open in April 2027.

The facility will include canopies to prevent rainwater from being contaminated by waste materials.

It will be built adjacent to the existing centre, which will close before the end of June 2027 as part of restoration works.

The council said there would be an increase in traffic due to construction vehicles accessing the site.

People are advised to use Whittlesey and Wisbech recycling centres while the original centre is closed for a transfer period.

Ros Hathorn, chair of the county council's green and environment investment committee, said: "We know how much residents value ease of use, and the new facility has been designed with that in mind.

"This investment will provide residents with a modern recycling centre fit for the future and supports our ambition to build a more sustainable Cambridgeshire."
