Independent election observers arrive in Jersey
PA MediaA team of independent and impartial international election observers have arrived in the island ahead of election day on Sunday, election officials have said.
A total of 92 candidates are standing in the 2026 election with 28 deputy, 12 constable and nine senator roles up for grabs in the Jersey States Assembly.
The Election Observation Mission (EOM) said observers would meet with officials, candidates and local groups to "get an insight into the electoral process and Jersey's specific context".
Head of mission Gary Clueit said it was the third time the EOM had been invited to Jersey and it was "pleased to return".
He said: "Election observation is a vital part of strengthening democratic processes, and our mission will focus on assessing the election against established international standards.
"We look forward to engaging with stakeholders across Jersey and supporting transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the electoral process."
Lisa Hart, Greffier of the States, said independent observation played "an important role" and Jersey could "learn from each election".
She said: "Their role in observing, scrutinising, and, where necessary, constructively challenging our systems is essential to maintaining and strengthening public trust in our democratic institutions.
"Our island has a long-standing commitment to open, fair, and transparent elections.
"We look forward to their feedback, which will help guide future improvements and thus contributes to the integrity and vitality of Jersey's democracy."
A preliminary statement from the EOM is due to be available on 8 June with its final report set to be released in the following three months.
