Plans to build almost 60 canalside homes as part of a wider scheme to regenerate an area of Sheffield have been submitted for council approval.

Housing association Places for People has submitted plans to Sheffield City Council to build the 59 homes on a site off Ardmore Street in Darnall, adjoining the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal.

The company has proposed to build 32 houses, as well as three blocks made up of a total of 27 apartments. The development would also include parking and open space.

A document supporting the proposal said the development would "deliver a well‑balanced community, blending smaller apartments with larger family homes to cater for a diverse range of household needs".

"The apartments are grouped toward the centre of the site, while the houses form perimeter streets and short cul-de-sacs with private rear gardens," the document said.

The proposed site was at one point used as a scrapyard and lies between the canal and Milton Chain Works.

The overall plan for the area involves building up to 3,000 homes and creating 1,500 jobs in the city's former industrial heartland in the Lower Don Valley, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Work has already begun to improve transport links between Attercliffe, Darnall and the city centre.

Other proposals include converting the former Adelphi Cinema into the centrepiece of a cultural hub.
