The heat caused the pavement in Bridlington to swell up

A Bridlington ice cream parlour was forced to shut on the hottest day of the year so far after the pavement outside began to swell up.

Staff at the kiosk at Jerome's Pavilion on Garrison Street were eventually forced to call the fire service on Monday.

Manager Mark Freeman said: "The pavement started rising kerb-to-kiosk like a hump."

Firefighters smashed the pavement to release the pressure and were rewarded with ice creams as thanks for their efforts.

The shop closed at about 19:30 BST on what was a record-breaking day for sales.

Freeman said the council advised him to call the fire service as the swelling "was causing damage to the kiosk".

He said firefighters told him the record temperature was responsible as the pavement was built on concrete blocks.

"Due to the heat, there was no expansion gap between them, so as it swelled up there was nowhere for it to go," Freeman said.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council workers have since been to the scene and removed the blocks and put safety barriers up, allowing the business to reopen.
