Denbighshire council is considering allowing short stay overnight parking for motorhomes

Motorhomes could be allowed to stay overnight in car parks because of an increase in their numbers since Covid-19.

Denbighshire council has received an application from its highways department to turn 10 spaces into spots where the vehicles could stay for a maximum of two nights.

The scheme, at Lower Barkby car park on Barkby Avenue, in Prestatyn, would include changing vehicle and pedestrian access, connecting to the sewer, and installing waste and recycling facilities.

The application said foul drainage would be connected to the mains sewer next to an existing toilets building.

The site would cover about half an acre (0.2 hectare), according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

A planning report said motorhome ownership had grown in the UK since the pandemic and that the county had numerous "hotspot locations".

It said: "The Denbighshire motorhome 'Aires' project is the result of detailed research and background work over the last 18 months, to try to address the issues that occur within Denbighshire of motorhomes parking overnight in unauthorised locations.

"The Aires project is not to compete with existing holiday parks but is a pilot project for very basic, short-stay (two nights maximum) overnight parking for motorhomes on car parks which are located adjacent to towns and existing facilities."

At the moment, the report said, motorhomes had been allowed to use car parks where there were no height restrictions but could not stop overnight.

The report said six car parks had been earmarked for the scheme.

The locations include:

  • Quay Street Car Park and Marine Drive (East Parade) in Rhyl
  • Lower Barkby Car Park in Prestatyn
  • Park Road Car Park in Ruthin
  • Mill Street Car Park in Llangollen, and
  • Green Lane Car Park in Corwen

The plans are expected to be discussed by the council's planning committee.
