Hundreds will take to Guernsey's marina for the Classic Channel Regatta on Saturday

More than 80 yachts and hundreds of sailing enthusiasts are set to take part in a "highlight of the summer season" on Saturday.

Crews taking part in the Classic Channel Regatta will be welcomed with a reception at Castle Cornet before setting sail for Lézardrieux, France, the next day.

It follows the return of Guernsey's Harbour Carnival last week and The Tour des Ports de la Manche racing into St Peter Port on Thursday.

The Tour des Ports de la Manche, which is in its 43rd year, is considered to be one of the biggest regattas in the French sailing calendar.

It is understood to have attracted its largest fleet of the decade, with more than 100 yachts and about 500 crew members signed up to compete in the six-stage race around Normandy and the Channel Islands.

Crews stayed in Guernsey overnight on Thursday before departing for Diélette the following day.

Kieran Higgs, head of port operations, said the regattas are "always a highlight of the summer season" adding the port is "delighted to welcome so many visiting sailors to Guernsey Marinas".

He said: "Over 200 yachts are scheduled to arrive in Guernsey in the next week alone, creating an incredible sight in our waters and showcasing the island as a prime destination for marine tourism."
