Plans for a housing estate with 542 homes on greenfield land have been submitted.

Miller Homes is seeking to build the properties on 39.4 hectares of "unused" land near Sulgrave Road in Washington .

The estate would include 60 two-bedroom homes, 217 three-bedroom homes, 221 four-bedroom homes, and 44 five-bedroom homes.

The developer said it hoped to start construction later this year. Sunderland City Council is expected to decide on the scheme following a consultation.

About 81 of the 542 homes are expected to be listed at affordable rates, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Vehicle access is proposed from the A1290, with the layout "centred on a primary route through the site and a network of secondary streets".

The planning statement, submitted on behalf of Miller Homes, stressed there was a "clear need to deliver new homes in this area of Sunderland".
