A night on the town ended with a man being given a lift home by the life brigade.

A member of the public called the coastguard after they found the man, who they believed was unconscious, lying face down in the sand at Whitley Bay at 11:30 BST.

Eight members of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were sent to the scene and discovered the "casualty" was on the beach recovering from a night out in Newcastle.

"Although they did not require nor ask for any assistance, given that they had misplaced their house keys and phone, team members gave them a lift back to their home address in North Shields before standing down," a life brigade spokesperson said.
